For the last couple of weeks, I have been telephonically touring the country, so to speak, speaking to radio hosts in virtually every market in America about my new book, The Richest Man in Town. I have enjoyed these chats immensely, but I find it so curious that the number one question I expected from all of these local radio shows, “Who is the richest man or woman in our town?” is not their first question. In fact, in most cases, the question has not been asked at all. On occasion, I admit, I offer the answer by posing the question myself. Given our American obsession with people and personalities, it just seems to me that the listener must be wondering. However, so far in over 30 interviews, the question of “Who is the richest man in town?” was asked fewer than five times, if memory serves. Remembering my Journalism 101 class at the University of Georgia, where I was taught that every article or story must answer who, what, when, where, why, and how, I find this omission, upon reflection, more than a little curious, but I think I finally understand why. We are living in such turbulent economic times that what interests these radio pros most are the lessons from the book on how to create wealth, as opposed to fascination with those who have already done so. Yes, they want details on the 12 Commandments of Wealth, perhaps so both they and their listeners can grab hold of the American Dream. I think they have it right after all.
